Anniversary-year historic merit badges are 'live'

The four historic merit badges for the 2010 100th anniversary year have been approved and are now official and ready to go.
The four — Capentry, Pathfinding, Tracking and Signaling — will be available ONLY during this year, and Scouts MUST finish all requirements by Dec. 31. The national rule is that no cards may be turned in after that date.
To give your guys a chance at these oldies-but-goodies badges that will be unique on their sashes, get a counselor lined up and get them going. Maybe summer camp is your opportunity?
Details on the Historic Merit Badge program are on the national website.

Council Takes Up Conservation With New Committee, Web Site

The Occoneechee Council has formed a Conservation Committee and given the program its own Web site at scoutconservation.net. The site contains a wealth of information about how Scouting and environmental conservation go hand-in-hand, and it has numerous links to resources inside and outside Scouting. One section runs down the conservation awards available at the various levels of Scouting.

Conservation will be featured during the Fall Camporee Oct. 9-11 at Camp Reeves.

The contact for the conservation committee is Chip Willey, whom you can reach at rfwilley3rd@gmail.com.

Events to Celebrate a Century of Scouting in 2010

Council has posted a 26-page PDF booklet that lists events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in the United States in 2010. Highlights include an exhibition that opens Feb. 8 at the Museum of History in downtown Raleigh and a Centennial Cookbook for which recipes must be submitted by OCT. 1 of THIS year.

There also will a 100-year Report to the Governor presented by 100 Scouts from the 100 North Carolina counties. Occoneechee will send 12 Scouts, and nominations for that honor are due at Council in Raleigh no later than NOV. 1. The nomination form is in the booklet.

The Occoneechee Council theme for the year is "Get Out and Scout," and that will include service projects as part of a statewide theme. Check it all out in the booklet.

The people who manage these properties would like you to help the efforts to preserve our history.

There are two major historical properties right here in Hillsborough which are available for you to use, Ayr Mount Historic Site and Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail (HOST). The historical properties can use and do need your project ideas.

Individuals (i.e. Eagle Scout candidates) and groups (packs, troops, & crews) are invited to develop improvement ideas then carry them out, for the good of the historical groups.
